Emergency Services

Community Fire HallFire and Rescue

Fire fighting capability is based on a pumper truck, and equipment from the Community Fire Hall. Portable forestry equipment is also available for grass and brush fires.

Norway House Fire Department has Fire Fighter Training ongoing and is conducted by the Fire Chief. The NHCC Fire Fighters are trained in search & rescue, ice & water rescue, emergency fire fighting, and water search & rescue.

Medical

Medical response is based on the federal hospital in Norway House staffed with 5 Doctors, 15 Nurses, a Medical & Public Health Centre, and 3 Community Health Workers. Norway House Cree Nation provides local medical transportation services for treaty status people.

Airstrip

Manitoba Transportation and Government services, Northern Airports operate a 3,922 x 100’ crushed rock airstrip in the community with terminal, remote- controlled lighting and fuel facilities. Norway House Airport provides weather data on a 24 hr/day basis under contract to Atmospheric Services Canada.

Ferry Service

Manitoba Transportation and Government Services, marine services cable ferry James Apetagon provides daily service on the access highway across the Nelson River.

Hydro

Provided by Manitoba Hydro as land-line electric power. Hydro office is located in Norway House~ (204) 359-6270. Residential rates are:

Manitoba Telecom Services provides individual-line service and digital switching with toll-free calling to Cross Lake. Call MTS toll-free at (204) 225-5687.

Water Disposal

Solid waste disposal site is located near the community on the reserve, and transported to the waste disposal site is contracted out. Sewage is handled by a combination of sewage collection lines and a pump out truck to a lagoon located in the community.

Water Treatment PlantNorway House Community Council Water Treatment Plant

Upgraded in 2000, the Water Plant draws water from the Nelson River and is filtered and treated before distribution. Truck delivery is available for houses not yet connected to the system.

Schools

Frontier School Division operates three schools in Norway House. Jack River School, Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Resource Centre provide up to 200 or more jobs. The schools do not separate treaty and non-treaty students for enrolment statistics. The Division has an agreement with the Norway House Band to provide services for treaty students.
